Grainger Engineers Accelerating Research (GEAR) Program

The GEAR Program helps tenure-track and specialized faculty new to Grainger Engineering launch their research through in-person meetings covering topics important for success. GEAR meetings are hands-on and include faculty panels sharing their experience on the different topics, peer discussions, and application to the GEAR participants’ unique situations.

All first- and second-year full-time or part-time faculty members in the Grainger College of Engineering are automatically eligible to participate in GEAR and become GEAR Scholars.

Assistant faculty in their third year or beyond, or those with zero-percent appointments, may be considered on a case-by-case basis. To request consideration, please complete the GEAR Interest Form and contact a member of the GEAR team.

Participants can earn the GEAR Scholar designation by completing the following requirements:

  • Attend at least 75% of the required sessions
  • Share research concept and meet with (in-person or virtually) a Program Manager
  • Share a draft proposal to be reviewed

GEAR Scholars receive hotel support for the annual Washington, D.C. trip and a signed certificate from the Grainger College of Engineering. 

1. Build Your Research Funding Portfolio

Develop a personalized strategy for securing research funding throughout your career. Drawing on over a decade of experience supporting Grainger faculty, GEAR introduces a practical framework to help you:

  • Define your core research
  • Generate competitive research ideas
  • Identify funding sources
  • Find targeted funding opportunities
  • Develop stronger grant proposals
  • Build relationships with industry and agency program managers

Throughout the academic year, you'll apply this framework to your own research through GEAR workshops and activities. The program culminates with an optional trip to Washington, D.C., where cohort members meet with federal agency program managers they have identified and scheduled. Building a successful research funding portfolio requires continued effort beyond the workshops, and GEAR is designed to provide the foundation, tools, and support to help you get started.

2. Expand Your Research Network and Resources

Connect with the people and resources that will support your research success. GEAR helps participants:

  • Discover research resources available across The Grainger College of Engineering and the University of Illinois
  • Learn about tools and services that support research development
  • Build relationships with peers, mentors, and campus partners
  • Gain insights and practical advice from experienced faculty who have successfully navigated the research funding landscape

Jorge Correa Panesso: 25-26 GEAR Scholar

GEAR was a very satisfactory and valuable program for me. As a teaching faculty member with a disciplinary research track record, I had been looking for a way to begin developing my engineering education research agenda, and GEAR provided that opportunity.
 
I entered the program with several ongoing project ideas. Through GEAR, I was able to reflect on and shape my research portfolio, develop a draft proposal, receive feedback from professional reviewers, and participate in a trip to Washington, D.C., where I learned about agency needs and potential funding matches. The program also helped me better understand the many research-support divisions across the Grainger College of Engineering and the University of Illinois—knowledge that is essential for new faculty who want to build an active research program.
 
Because of GEAR, I am now writing two papers, one of which is coauthored with a lab director at an agency from which I hope to seek funding. I would strongly recommend that new faculty participate in this program as early as possible.

GEAR gave me a strong start as a new faculty member. I met faculty across the Grainger College of Engineering, learned about their research, and started conversations that could lead to future collaborations. I also gained invaluable insight into the internal funding process, helping me identify opportunities to get my lab off the ground.

GEAR helped me think beyond the perspective of a researcher by evaluating proposals through the lens of a reviewer, program manager, and researchers from other disciplines. That shift has made me a stronger proposal writer and helped me develop more compelling research ideas.

My advice to new faculty: Do it. By the end of the program, you'll be surprised by how much you've grown. Even if you already have proposal-writing experience, GEAR is worth it for the networking, the insights into the funding process, and yes—the free lunches don't hurt either.
